The Web Within: Exploring the Fascial System

You’ve probably heard the saying “your issues are in your tissues” and when it comes to your fascia, this saying rings true.

Fascia is the interconnected connective tissue web that weaves through every part of your body, encapsulating your muscles, nerves, bones, and organs. It’s the body’s richest sensory organ, often referred to as the “organ of form” because it informs the structure and form of who you are

It is this network that stores the imprint of stress, emotions and repeated postures or patterns that we move through day to day. It is these same tissues that are intricately connected to and communicating with your nervous system about how we are moving, feeling and being in the world.

By connecting everything to everything else it transfers and communicates the strain & pressures of physical, chemical & emotional tension throughout your body. When layers of your fascial web become dehydrated and/or stuck from lack of movement, injury or stress, it loses its inherent ability to slide and glide freely. This creates a limited range of mobility & expression in your tissues which can manifest as restricted movement, aches and discomfort.

At Unbound we recognise the significance of connecting with your fascial network,  using specific light touch & inviting your breath and awareness to specific regions of your body and spine, we allow tension patterns to unwind and release.

Simple ways to support healthy fascia;

  • Yin Yoga; fascia responds best to slow and sustained postures/ stretches

  • Moving regularly, making sure it is balanced side to side

  • Stay hydrated! Water is essential for good fascial mobility

  • Regular massage of scar tissue (cesarean scars included mamas!) encouraging the return of mobility to the area and promote healing.
